In the past few weeks you've probably noticed that every social media network has been blowing up with videos and pictures of people dumping buckets of ice water on their head and challenging other people to do the same. The whole idea is to dump a bucket of ice water on your head and challenge at least three people to do the same in 24 hours or donate $100 to an ALS foundation of their choice. It's a publicity push to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. It is a neurodegenerative disease that impacts the nerve cells in the brain and spinal chord.
The whole ALS Challenge is said to be controversial due to the fact that some people are not donating any money. I think it is a good thing to do whether you donate money or not. It is just like people wearing pink for breast cancer. According to an article in the Huffington Post the challenge has lead to a 1,000% increase in donations for ALS Associations across the nation. This weekend I accepted the ALS challenge thanks to one of my sorority sisters. I accepted the challenge by dumping a bucket of ice water on my head, challenging three other people, and by donating money to the ALS foundation.
