As promised, I'm back with another post. Shocker..I know right? I made a vow to be a better blogger, and I'm doing my best to keep my word. Today was day two of the new year. It was page two of our 365 day book. This 365 day book of mine is one that I am incredibly excited for. With a new year comes an opportunity to set the reset button. It is kind of funny to think about because realistically not much changes between December 31st and January 1st.  Many people spend the month of January obsessing over their resolutions just to fall off the train by mid February.  I have never been one to set resolutions. In the past I have set goals and done a 101 in 1001 list. The 101 lists have been so fun to make, but I'm always the worst at following through with checking things off the list. However, goals and intentions are where I usually thrive.  I find them much easier to achieve, and they don't seem to overwhelm me as much. You might be thinking they are the same thing, but they are actually different! Goals are something you hope to achieve but might fall short. Whereas intentions are setting the mindset you want to have.

This year my intention is to simply form good daily habits. Now that we are in our own place, I've had to adapt how I live in many ways. The daily Starbucks trips have come to an end, the random trips to eat out during lunch because I was too lazy to pack have stopped, the shopping sprees without thinking twice are no longer, and even more simply my daily routines are totally different. I've taken on more responsibilities both physically and financially. #adulting is in full swing now, and it is now time for me to pull it together. Sure I could set some resolutions related to this, but I feel like setting the intention to be mindful of my daily habits will take me further. After-all, nothing changes long term if you don't make any short term changes along the way.

Goal Getter
I'm a huge fan of setting goals. I like to set goals that are achievable with a little challenge. If it is not reasonable, then you will just end up feeling defeated. This year's goals are related to self improvement.

101 in 1001: I absolutely love these lists, but I think I was a little out of touch with reality when I made my list. There are some things on here that I know won't be crossed off. This current list is set to expire in fall of 2019.  With the little bit of time I have left, I want to work to reach at least 50% of the items before it's time to make a new list. I think I can easily get fifteen items crossed off.

Fitness: The item that is on everyone's new year resolutions list.  I seriously need to start sweating for the wedding now that we have hit the one year mark. I have been awful about working out regularly since I've started #adulting. I feel like the past two years I've gone in waves of being really good about it and then I fall off again.  Today I started the BBG twelve week plan. I completed the first four weeks at the end of the summer, but back to school and coaching took up all of my time (or at least that's what my excuse is). I'm ready to make myself a priority, which means making time for daily workouts. I think these workouts will be great for my current schedule because they require minimal equipment, are flexible, and not too time consuming.

Daily Routines: We moved almost three weeks ago, but with the holidays I have yet to form daily routines. If you know me, then you know that I thrive with routines.  I'm hoping to form routines filled with healthy habits over the next month or so. This includes silly things like sitting down to eat breakfast before leaving for work, reading daily, going for a walk with the dog each day after work, picking my work clothes out for the week, meal prepping, daily skincare routines, etc.

Find balance: If there is one thing I sucked at in 2018, it was finding balance in life. I'm the type of person who commits whole-heartedly to anything and everything that I do. If I'm going to half-ass something, then I just would rather not do it.  There's definitely pros and cons to my all or nothing attitude. The pros are that I usually excel at what I put my mind to, but the cons are that it usually means another part of my life suffers. It's no secret that my plate is full, but I need to be better about balancing coaching, teaching, time with friends, time with family, blogging, fitness, and simply time to take care of myself. I am hoping that my intention of 2019 will help me find this balance.

Whether you are setting goals, intentions, or resolutions it is important to hold yourself accountable. The first month is easy because you are surrounded by so many other people who have this rejuvenated mindset, but as the year goes on this tribe tends to dwindle providing more temptations than before. Know that you are not alone in your new endeavors. There is always somebody out there cheering for you or going through the same struggles you are.

What are your goals or intentions for the new year?
XOXO

Goal Setting Update

If you've been reading my blog for some time now, then you have come to learn how much I love goal setting.  I am not one to set resolutions because they are too vague, which means I never stick to them.  I like setting goals because they are clear and concise. It's easy to tell whether or not you have achieved them or if you fell short. Quality goals are measurable, which makes them easier to check off as accomplished tasks. Last January I created my new year goals a little differently. I created my second 101 things to accomplish in 1,001 days list.  Well, it's been just over a year, so I thought it was time for an update on what I've accomplished thus far.

In the past year I have been able to check 22 items off the list. Not quite as many as I had hoped, but it's certainly a start. Take a look at some of the tasks I've completed below.

Collaborate with a Brand
Check out my post on how to conquer and early morning gym session here

Go a month without shopping
Intentionally, I chose the shortest month of the year to complete this task.  It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.  I think it helps that my birthday is this month, so anything I wanted I just asked for on my birthday wish list.  I think I'm going to be forced to complete this challenge again, at some point, this year because we are saving to pay for our wedding and a future house.

Buy a Car
In April, I got my first teaching position as a Long Term Substitute. The money I made along with what I had saved allowed me to purchase my own car.  It was a little out of my budget, but since I spend so much time commuting to work I definitely don't mind the pricey car payment.  If you're looking for a new car, then I highly recommend checking out Subaru.

Have My Own Classroom
This summer was spend job hunting.  The first week in August I was on vacation with my family when I received the long awaited "you got the job" phone call.  I spent a few days in August setting up the classroom that I have been teaching in for the past five months.  It's crazy to believe that I'm coming up on the half way mark of my first full year teaching! Here's a sneak peak of my room. I'm planning to give you a more detailed tour in the upcoming month!

Attend a Concert
To conclude the summer, my family went to see Zac Brown Band.  It was such a fun concert. If you haven't seen him, then definitely add him to your list of bands to see.  I would recommend seeing him at a smaller venue if possible. My dad, who doesn't love country music, even thought the show was awesome.

Complete a Knitting Project
I forgot to take a picture of the final project, but last year I spent several months creating the softest baby blanket for one of my closest friends.  I gave her the gift just before her baby was born, and it turns out to be one of his favorite blankets now!

Attend a Wine Tasting
Mid May we travelled to Virginia with Todd's family.  We took advantage of being in wine country and toured several different wineries. Our favorite was a small family run vineyard.  They served the tastiest homemade snacks to pair with each wine.

Visit a Beer Garden
One of our favorite local watering holes during the summer is a pop up beer garden.  They have yard games, live music, food trucks,  a different brand of beer on tap each weekend, kids activities, and are dog friendly.  We're hoping that our pup will be calm enough to tag along with us this upcoming summer.

NHL Game, NBA Game, and MBA game
So close to making it to all four major sports in one year!  We went to a Philadelphia Flyers game, Philadelphia Eagles game, and a Philadelphia 76ers game this past year.  I'm hoping to make it to a Phillies game sometime this spring or summer.

Visit Charleston, SC & Play Mini Golf & Try a New Brewery
This summer my family packed up the car and headed down south for a week of relaxation.  Charleston was absolutely amazing.  I loved the balance of history, beach time, and fabulous food/beverages. My family has developed a tradition of playing mini golf on vacation. Of course we searched for a place to keep the tradition going in South Carolina.  You don't know what competitive is until you've played a round of mini golf with us.

I have 633 days left to complete 79 tasks. I think it is definitely doable as long as I stay focused. As I rang in the new year, I thought about how I can be more diligent with completing my list.  I decided to break the tasks down by month.  I decided that on average I need to complete about 4-5 tasks per month.

This month I am working to begin crossing off some longer term goals: starting grad school, reading at least a book per month, not letting more than two days pass without some type of exercising, and by publishing a "how to" post.

The short goals I plan to cross off my list this month include visiting NYC, watching a movie at a movie tavern, inspiring at least one other person to create their own goal list, and leave a 100% tip somewhere even if it's just at the local coffee shop.

If you're interested in making your own list, then I have a few tips for you.  First, take a look at several different people's list to gain inspiration. Second, break your list down into topics. This will make it easier to come up with 101 items.  Third, once you've made your list break it down into small monthly tasks.  Fourth, have fun!

If you're interested in making a list, let me know so I can cross off that I've inspired someone!

Stay current with my list throughout the year by checking here frequently.

Summer Reading List

My goal for this year was to read a book each month. So far I have been able to do so successfully. This summer I've actually been able to read two to three books per month. Summer is hands down the time of year when I am able to get the most reading done. I am still busy in the summer months, but no school work is involved so it allows me more time to read.

During the day I am a summer nanny. The children I look after are getting older and don't need to be entertained by me every minute of the day, which allows me to have more free time while watching them. My favorite activity to pass the time is to read. I can take a book anywhere we go- the pool, trampoline park, swim lessons, outside, inside, etc. The amount of reading I get done depends on the week, but there are some weeks when I am able to read at least a whole book. I try to read at night, but I usually get no further than ten pages and you will find me asleep with all the lights on.

Most books I read during the summer are light beach reads.  I like mindless reading that has a happy ending. This summer I seem to be mixing it up a bit more with some thrillers and non fiction.

Finished
"...Straub packs wisdom and insight and humor together in a satisfying book about neighbors and nosiness, ambition and pleasure, the excitement of youth, the shock of middle age, and the fact that our passions- be they food, or friendship, or music-never  go away, they just evolve and grow along with us."

"Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their desk. She's even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life-as she sees it- is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost. Until today. And then she see something shocking.."

"At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone."

Currently Reading:
"Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah's voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out why."

What's Next:
"Isabella, Mary, and Lauren feel like everyone they know is getting married. On Sunday after Sunday, at bridal shower after bridal shower, they coo over toasters, collect ribbons and wrapping paper, eat minuscule sandwiches and cakes. They wear pastel dresses and drink champagne by the case, but amid the celebration these women have their own lives to contend with: Isabella is working a dead-end job, Mary is dating a nice guy with an awful mother, and Lauren is waitressing at a midtown bar and wondering why she's attracted to the sleazy bartender."

"In this refreshingly entertaining how-to guide, #1 New York Times Bestselling
Author and world-traveling success coach, Jen Sincero, serves up 27 bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, sage advice, easy exercises, and the occasional swear word. If you're ready to make some serious changes around here, You Are a Badass will help you: Identify and change the self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviors that stop you from getting what you want, blast past your fears so you can take big exciting risks, figure out how to make some damn money already, learn to love yourself and others, set big goals and reach them - it will basically show you how to create a life you totally love, and how to create it NOW."

"Is it really better to have loved and lost?  Louna's summer job is to help brides plan their perfect day, even though she stopped believing in happily-ever-after when her first love ended tragically.  But charming girl-magnet Ambrose isn't about to be discouraged now that he's met the one he really  wants.  Maybe Louna's second chance is standing right in front of her."

Note: book descriptions are from Amazon

I'd love to hear about what books you've been reading this summer. I'm always looking for books to add to my reading list!

101 Things in 1001 Days Part Two

Today is the first Monday of the new year. It's a fresh start and the first day of many people's journey to conquer their New Year's Resolutions.  On Friday I shared how I prefer setting monthly goals rather than annual unattainable resolutions.  Today I'm sharing my 101 things to do in 1001 days list with you.  This is my second list. You can checkout my first list here. I ended up completing about half of the items on the list. With my new list, I'm hoping to get closer to completing 100% of it. This time around I split my list into categories, which made it easier to create and hopefully complete.

What is a 101 in 1001 list?
So if you have no idea what a 101 things in 1001 days list is, then I'm sure you're a little confused and curious.  The idea is to make goal setting more realistic, but to also add some dreams to your list.  You create a list of 101 things you want to accomplish over the course of the next 1001 days.  it is pretty self explanatory, but I think the concept it pretty fun.  It's more challenging than you would think to come up with the complete list.  If you need help counting 1001 days from when you start, then feel free to use this calculator to help you out.

If you end up creating a list, please tweet me your link. I'll add your name to the list on my 101 in 1001 tab. The whole point of this is to be inspired and inspire others, so I would love to hear from you!

September Goals

{Image via}

This week we enter a new month of 2016, September. They say that September is just an extension of summer.  The weather might still be hot and sunny and my summer wardrobe might still be worn throughout the month.  However, if I look at my calendar I definitely am not getting those care free summer vibes.  My September is quickly filling up with day of teaching, afternoons of coaching, field hockey games under the lights, back to school night, a celebration and a possible weekend trip or two. Looking ahead at the month makes me wish I was away carefree in Vermont again. Unfortunately, I can't be an ostrich and put my head in the sand to pretend like summer isn't over.  I thought some goals were necessary in order to conquer this busy month.

One:workout five times a week
I think this is definitely doable, but I'm definitely going to need some motivation and self discipline.  I've been doing this for the past three weeks now, but this week my schedule starts to get busier so this becomes more challenging.  I'm going to have to become a night time workout person rather than the early morning gym goer.

Two: publish 15 posts
A few weeks ago I shared that I will be posting three times a week in order to produce quality posts rather than quantity during my busy semester. My hope is to publish three posts a week plus an extra one or two.  I have been working hard to create my editorial calendar a month at a time and drafting posts a week in advance, so I think this will be an achievable goal.  I am thinking of dedicating a few hours each Sunday to draft my posts.

Three: create a new 101 list
On September 30th my 101 in 1001 list comes to an end. I certainly have not completed my list, but I got a decent amount of items checked off of it. I think I made my list a little bit of a reach to complete.  I'm in the process of creating a new list, which I hope to begin sometime in October. This time around, I'm being more realistic about what I can and cannot do given my budget and time limits.

Four: create professional website
In three and a half months I will be graduating college and searching for a big girl job. I've heard from so many people how difficult it can be to land a teaching job fresh out of college. I'm working to differentiate myself from other candidates in order to hopefully increase my chances of getting a job. I'd like to create a professional website that has a digital version of my resume, some lessons I've planned and taught, my letters of recommendation, and more information.

Five: establish a morning routine
This is something that I think will make my life so much easier if I can achieve it.  I will have to leave my house by 6 am each morning, so I think having a smooth morning will lead to more successful days.  I'm hoping to have time to get ready and eat a sit down breakfast each morning before leaving more my hour commute to the school I'll be teaching out. I'm working on becoming an early morning person, but I certainly do not have it perfected just yet. I'd love any tips and tricks you guys have!

What are your goals for September?

Spring Semester Goals {Senior Year}

I love this phrase, "Goal digger".  I think it definitely is a great way to describe me. I am 90% goal oriented. I enjoy creating challenges for myself, working to achieve them, and celebrating my successes (small or large).  Within the first week of every semester, I like to set goals for myself. These help keep me motivated and push me to become better than I was the semester before.  I like to set a combination of goals that are easy and difficult to achieve.
So what are my goals for this semester?

One: Get 8 hours of sleep every night
During the fall semester I wasn't great about this and eventually it caught up with me.  I am a person who needs their sleep.  Last semester I didn't do this and then during my breaks I would sleep for long amounts of time (15+ hours) trying to catch up on the rest I deprived myself of while at school.

Two: Eat breakfast every day.
Everyone knows breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Although I know this, it tends to be the meal of the day that I skip.  I found some great mason jar breakfast recipes, so I am looking forward to trying some of them out this semester.

Three: Workout 3-5 times a week.
My university has a beautiful gym, and last semester I did not take advantage of it as much as I should have. I am working on developing healthy habits and being healthy is part of that.  Working out helps me stay focused and sane.

Four: Get a 4.0 or at least make Dean's List.
I have yet to get a 4.0, so yet again it's included in my list of semester goals. I have made Dean's List twice, so I would love to add a third semester to the list.

Five: Pass the Praxis II
As an education major, the Praxis is the exam that helps certify me to be a teacher.  Since I am a Middle Grades Education Major I have to pass six parts in total. Last semester, I passed one section so I have five to go.

Six: Blog five times a week.
Time and time again I have talked about not being a good blogger. I blog inconsistently, but this semester I am taking a vow to be a reliable blogger. Blogging five times a week sounds like a lofty goal, but I have faith that I can achieve it.

Seven: Create a morning routine.
I am not quite a morning person, but I am definitely not a night owl either. This semester I would like to develop a morning routine that helps me become more of a morning person. This semester I only have classes three out of the five days, but I would still like to wake up early and be productive on my days off. I think establishing a routine this semester will help me transition into my final semester of college where I will be student teaching (#adulting).

Eight: Meal prep on Sundays.
I love food and I enjoy cooking it too.  Just like every college student I am busy during the week.  By meal prepping on Sundays it will ensure that I am eating three healthy meals a day.

Nine: Make time for me.
I am slowly but surely getting better at this, but there is always room for improvement.  This is my last semester living on campus, so I am looking forward to making the most of it by having as much fun as possible.

Ten: Create a budget and stick to it.
Living in a town with many bars, great food, cute coffee shops, and numerous places to shop can make it easy to spend a lot of money.  This semester I am going to be more disciplined when it comes to spending money.

Good luck to those of you beginning a new semester!
