101 in 1001 Update

If you've been reading for a little bit of time, then you know that I love a good list. Naturally, a few years ago I opted out of making new year resolutions and opted to try a Mackenzie Horan inspired 101 in 1001 list.  The first time I created one, I basically created it and forgot to come back to it. I seriously think I crossed maybe a total of twelve things off the list..pretty pathetic.  Two years ago I decided to give it another try. You can read the post here. This second time around I haven't been great about sticking to setting goals from here to check things off the list, but I am definitely doing much better than before. My current list expires in September, and I still have 66 tasks to complete.  As of today, I've completed 34 of the items since the start.

What have I crossed off in the past year?

7. Publish three “how to” posts
Looking back, this is one of my favorite types of posts to write. There is something about inspiring  others that I really enjoy writing about.

17. Learn how to give myself a blowout
I went most of the summer without applying heat to my hair because my hair was reaching a really unhealthy point. When I went back to school,  I purchased a new blow dryer and since then have slowly been mastering the blowout. I watched this video over and over again to help. I've gotten to the point where I can blow out my hair, go to bed, and then wake up to just run the flat iron to smooth out the bumps from sleeping on my hair. This has significantly decreased the amount of heat that I've exposed my hair to.

18. Move into my first grown up apartment/home
In December, Todd and I bought our first home together. We skipped the whole renting phase and went straight from our parents house to owning our own home. It's a two bedroom two bathroom condo, so it's smaller than the single family home we thought we wanted. However, the smaller space is perfect for our current lifestyle. I'm excited to share more home updates with you guys soon!

23. Read a book a month
As a Language Arts teacher, I feel like I am constantly reading. Whether it is for my own pleasure, a book my students are reading, or a read aloud I'm doing with my class I am always in the midst of a book or two. Something that I have learned professionally is that you have to model a rich literacy life in order for students to buy in. This means that sometimes I am reading during class while my students are reading.  It is important for them to see me modeling what I ask of them.

January: Tangerine by Edward BloorFebruary: March:To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper LeeApril:Nine Women, One Dress by Jane Rosen, May: Words Their Way June: A Handful of Stars by Cynthia Lord, July: Small Great Things by Jody Picoult, August: Mrs. Bixby's Last Day by John Anderson, September: Fish in A Tree by Lynda Hunt, October:Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan, November: 180 Days December: Dear Martin by Nic Stone

30. Obtain a coaching certification
This year I returned back to the field hockey club that I played for in high school. I've transitioned from player to coach. I also started in a new high school coaching role. Between these two opportunities I was required to obtain several certifications. Most of these were related to safety.

39. Go for a hike somewhere new
If you're looking for something cheap to do while traveling, hanging out with friends, or while on a date, then I definitely recommend hiking. There are so many trails near you that you probably don't even know about.  This summer we went to North Carolina to visit friends and spent an afternoon exploring some trails. It was lots of fun and a great way for us to get some exercise while catching up.

59. Take dance lessons
I took a dance lesson last year, but not the type of lesson I had intended for when writing this list. For a friend's bachelorette party we took a booty popping class. It was so much fun! I still would like to take ballroom dancing lessons to prep for our wedding.

72. Plan a ladies’ weekend
One of the highlights from last year was that I was the Maid of Honor in my best friend's wedding. One of my big duties was to plan her bachelorette party weekend.  We ended up going to Nashville. I am planning to share my Nashville travel tips some time soon!

87. Go on a road trip
When you're balling on a budget road trips become your favorite way to travel without breaking the bank. Todd and I are at the point in our lives, where our friends live all over the country. In order to see a lot of our close friends we have to travel, so road trips have become our new specialty. You can checkout our guide to road tripping here

93. Take a trip with my mom
It's no secret that my mom and I are very close. One of the great things is that we are both teachers, so we tend to have off the same days. Last Spring Break, we ended up taking two mini trips. We kicked off our break with a road trip to upstate New York with my dad and our dogs.  My brother's college lacrosse team had a game, so we decided to make an adventure out of it. While we were there, we got to see Lake Ontario. It was a tad bit chilly, but definitely an experience that we will always remember.  We then came home for a day and packed our bags again to head to Virginia. We were in search of a new place to travel to for our family vacation. We found a sleepy little town that we ended up going back to this past summer for an entire week.

100. Visit NYC
This was actually one of the first things I did to kick off 2018. Thanks to a series of snow days, I had the opportunity to spend a weekend in the city with my sorority sisters from college. One of them lives outside the city in Hoboken, NJ.  We spent half the weekend exploring the city and the other half in her town. It was so much fun, but I definitely recommend a quality jacket if you're going to explore the city during the coldest weekend of the year!

So how in the world am I planning to come anywhere near close to finishing this list? Well, to be honest, I know that I will not be completing every item by September. I started grad school a little bit later, so I won't have my Masters or reading specialist certification. Realistically I think I can complete about 35 more things on the list by September. My plan is to make a monthly checklist to be able to cross things off.

So looking ahead at January and February. The following items are on the agenda: Start coloring in my adult coloring book, Continue to read, Send birthday cards, Continue to get back to running regularly, and Collect addresses

A few of these items I have already been in the process of completing, so I am hoping to finish them in the next month or so.  There are a few other items I am in the process of checking off list, but I'm not quite ready to share them with you guys yet.

What are your goals for the upcoming month?
Have you ever created a 101 in 1001 days list?
XOXO

Goal Setting Update

If you've been reading my blog for some time now, then you have come to learn how much I love goal setting.  I am not one to set resolutions because they are too vague, which means I never stick to them.  I like setting goals because they are clear and concise. It's easy to tell whether or not you have achieved them or if you fell short. Quality goals are measurable, which makes them easier to check off as accomplished tasks. Last January I created my new year goals a little differently. I created my second 101 things to accomplish in 1,001 days list.  Well, it's been just over a year, so I thought it was time for an update on what I've accomplished thus far.

In the past year I have been able to check 22 items off the list. Not quite as many as I had hoped, but it's certainly a start. Take a look at some of the tasks I've completed below.

Collaborate with a Brand
Check out my post on how to conquer and early morning gym session here

Go a month without shopping
Intentionally, I chose the shortest month of the year to complete this task.  It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.  I think it helps that my birthday is this month, so anything I wanted I just asked for on my birthday wish list.  I think I'm going to be forced to complete this challenge again, at some point, this year because we are saving to pay for our wedding and a future house.

Buy a Car
In April, I got my first teaching position as a Long Term Substitute. The money I made along with what I had saved allowed me to purchase my own car.  It was a little out of my budget, but since I spend so much time commuting to work I definitely don't mind the pricey car payment.  If you're looking for a new car, then I highly recommend checking out Subaru.

Have My Own Classroom
This summer was spend job hunting.  The first week in August I was on vacation with my family when I received the long awaited "you got the job" phone call.  I spent a few days in August setting up the classroom that I have been teaching in for the past five months.  It's crazy to believe that I'm coming up on the half way mark of my first full year teaching! Here's a sneak peak of my room. I'm planning to give you a more detailed tour in the upcoming month!

Attend a Concert
To conclude the summer, my family went to see Zac Brown Band.  It was such a fun concert. If you haven't seen him, then definitely add him to your list of bands to see.  I would recommend seeing him at a smaller venue if possible. My dad, who doesn't love country music, even thought the show was awesome.

Complete a Knitting Project
I forgot to take a picture of the final project, but last year I spent several months creating the softest baby blanket for one of my closest friends.  I gave her the gift just before her baby was born, and it turns out to be one of his favorite blankets now!

Attend a Wine Tasting
Mid May we travelled to Virginia with Todd's family.  We took advantage of being in wine country and toured several different wineries. Our favorite was a small family run vineyard.  They served the tastiest homemade snacks to pair with each wine.

Visit a Beer Garden
One of our favorite local watering holes during the summer is a pop up beer garden.  They have yard games, live music, food trucks,  a different brand of beer on tap each weekend, kids activities, and are dog friendly.  We're hoping that our pup will be calm enough to tag along with us this upcoming summer.

NHL Game, NBA Game, and MBA game
So close to making it to all four major sports in one year!  We went to a Philadelphia Flyers game, Philadelphia Eagles game, and a Philadelphia 76ers game this past year.  I'm hoping to make it to a Phillies game sometime this spring or summer.

Visit Charleston, SC & Play Mini Golf & Try a New Brewery
This summer my family packed up the car and headed down south for a week of relaxation.  Charleston was absolutely amazing.  I loved the balance of history, beach time, and fabulous food/beverages. My family has developed a tradition of playing mini golf on vacation. Of course we searched for a place to keep the tradition going in South Carolina.  You don't know what competitive is until you've played a round of mini golf with us.

I have 633 days left to complete 79 tasks. I think it is definitely doable as long as I stay focused. As I rang in the new year, I thought about how I can be more diligent with completing my list.  I decided to break the tasks down by month.  I decided that on average I need to complete about 4-5 tasks per month.

This month I am working to begin crossing off some longer term goals: starting grad school, reading at least a book per month, not letting more than two days pass without some type of exercising, and by publishing a "how to" post.

The short goals I plan to cross off my list this month include visiting NYC, watching a movie at a movie tavern, inspiring at least one other person to create their own goal list, and leave a 100% tip somewhere even if it's just at the local coffee shop.

If you're interested in making your own list, then I have a few tips for you.  First, take a look at several different people's list to gain inspiration. Second, break your list down into topics. This will make it easier to come up with 101 items.  Third, once you've made your list break it down into small monthly tasks.  Fourth, have fun!

If you're interested in making a list, let me know so I can cross off that I've inspired someone!

Stay current with my list throughout the year by checking here frequently.

XOXO

Summer Reading List

My goal for this year was to read a book each month. So far I have been able to do so successfully. This summer I've actually been able to read two to three books per month. Summer is hands down the time of year when I am able to get the most reading done. I am still busy in the summer months, but no school work is involved so it allows me more time to read.

During the day I am a summer nanny. The children I look after are getting older and don't need to be entertained by me every minute of the day, which allows me to have more free time while watching them. My favorite activity to pass the time is to read. I can take a book anywhere we go- the pool, trampoline park, swim lessons, outside, inside, etc. The amount of reading I get done depends on the week, but there are some weeks when I am able to read at least a whole book. I try to read at night, but I usually get no further than ten pages and you will find me asleep with all the lights on.

Most books I read during the summer are light beach reads.  I like mindless reading that has a happy ending. This summer I seem to be mixing it up a bit more with some thrillers and non fiction.

Finished
"...Straub packs wisdom and insight and humor together in a satisfying book about neighbors and nosiness, ambition and pleasure, the excitement of youth, the shock of middle age, and the fact that our passions- be they food, or friendship, or music-never  go away, they just evolve and grow along with us."

"Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their desk. She's even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life-as she sees it- is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost. Until today. And then she see something shocking.."

"At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone."

Currently Reading:
"Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah's voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out why."

What's Next:
"Isabella, Mary, and Lauren feel like everyone they know is getting married. On Sunday after Sunday, at bridal shower after bridal shower, they coo over toasters, collect ribbons and wrapping paper, eat minuscule sandwiches and cakes. They wear pastel dresses and drink champagne by the case, but amid the celebration these women have their own lives to contend with: Isabella is working a dead-end job, Mary is dating a nice guy with an awful mother, and Lauren is waitressing at a midtown bar and wondering why she's attracted to the sleazy bartender."

"In this refreshingly entertaining how-to guide, #1 New York Times Bestselling
Author and world-traveling success coach, Jen Sincero, serves up 27 bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, sage advice, easy exercises, and the occasional swear word. If you're ready to make some serious changes around here, You Are a Badass will help you: Identify and change the self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviors that stop you from getting what you want, blast past your fears so you can take big exciting risks, figure out how to make some damn money already, learn to love yourself and others, set big goals and reach them - it will basically show you how to create a life you totally love, and how to create it NOW."

"Is it really better to have loved and lost?  Louna's summer job is to help brides plan their perfect day, even though she stopped believing in happily-ever-after when her first love ended tragically.  But charming girl-magnet Ambrose isn't about to be discouraged now that he's met the one he really  wants.  Maybe Louna's second chance is standing right in front of her."

Note: book descriptions are from Amazon

I'd love to hear about what books you've been reading this summer. I'm always looking for books to add to my reading list!

101 Things in 1001 Days Part Two

Today is the first Monday of the new year. It's a fresh start and the first day of many people's journey to conquer their New Year's Resolutions.  On Friday I shared how I prefer setting monthly goals rather than annual unattainable resolutions.  Today I'm sharing my 101 things to do in 1001 days list with you.  This is my second list. You can checkout my first list here. I ended up completing about half of the items on the list. With my new list, I'm hoping to get closer to completing 100% of it. This time around I split my list into categories, which made it easier to create and hopefully complete.

What is a 101 in 1001 list?
So if you have no idea what a 101 things in 1001 days list is, then I'm sure you're a little confused and curious.  The idea is to make goal setting more realistic, but to also add some dreams to your list.  You create a list of 101 things you want to accomplish over the course of the next 1001 days.  it is pretty self explanatory, but I think the concept it pretty fun.  It's more challenging than you would think to come up with the complete list.  If you need help counting 1001 days from when you start, then feel free to use this calculator to help you out.

If you end up creating a list, please tweet me your link. I'll add your name to the list on my 101 in 1001 tab. The whole point of this is to be inspired and inspire others, so I would love to hear from you!
